AI and understanding semantics — the next stage in the evolution of NLP is close

It’s an understatement that Search has come a long way – fact that people use “Google” as a verb these days, says it all. Gone are those days when Search was keyword-driven, Search results were links to other websites,  and users had to sift through a number of links before really finding what they were looking for. It at times feels magical that Search engines know, with unbelievable accuracy, exactly what you are looking for. This is the result of a heavy investment in NLP and Semantic technologies.

We are also currently working on an autonomous conversational agent in a junior high through college classroom setting. Natural language processing

Natural Language Processing (NLP) applies the power of computing to the complexity and nuance of human language. At BBC R&D, we are exploring how NLP can help us better understand and serve our audiences. “As these costs decline from advancements in AI hardware, we will see ourselves getting closer to models that understand larger collections of text. This is somewhat proven by Open AI’s GPT-2 model, which shows that using the same sentence encoding model designs with a large amount of data, produces models that already understand high-level concepts across many sentences. For example, GPT-2 understands enough to write entire news articles with astonishing coherence. Our goal is automatically extracting the timeline of a disease and its treatment from patient records.

“The idea is that you can take a sentence, encode it into a sentence (or thought) vector and then find similar sentence vectors. If encoded well, your search function can find very different looking sentences that express the same idea. We can’t possibly keep track of everything that is happening day to day – in the news, in medicine, in financial markets, on social media, etc.

It’s just cool…and cutting edgeAs humans continue to push boundaries on what machines could do for them, both ability to process natural language better, and ability to sift through huge knowledge bases will be critical in creating a slingshot effect. While we have come a long way indeed, we are still able to solve only a small percentage of NLP problems through smart application of Bag of Words and POS tagging techniques. There are plenty of areas including syntactic parsing, anaphoric resolutions, text summarization where we need to evolve considerably. That’s essentially why NLP and Search continue to attract significant research dollars. Going forward, innovative platforms will be those that are able to process language better and provide friendlier interaction mechanisms beyond a keyboard. Possibilities are immense be it intelligent answering machines, machine-to-machine communications or machines that can take action on behalf of humans.

But still, many large companies are using email or telephone as their main contact strategy, even though messaging has been proven to be much preferable for billions of people. Those companies in the know have started to use chatbots to field the FAQs and cut down call center times, but chatbots can be limited in their use cases and complicated to set up. We have companies that have a threshold for VIPs that is 100%, therefore we always send those customers to a human.

Tip number three on bots is they generally aren’t good enough yet for a variety of reasons, so companies need to be careful and cautious about deploying them, lest they embarrass and hurt the brand. The ones that are good are for very specific use cases. For example, some scheduling bots are pretty good at scheduling and some structured bots are good for things like buying from a limited menu of options. However, once people reach out to you through a channel, then they start thinking they can reach out about other stuff through that same channel.

Tip number two on bots is to carefully select your channels. There are many messaging platforms out there, so which are relevant for you? If you’re in the US, maybe SMS texting and Facebook Messenger are enough, but if you’re in China as well, you also need WeChat and in Korea, you need Line. At a basic level, start with SMS texting and the top messaging app used by your target audience and go from there.

Email answers are not the same as chat answers are not the same as text messaging answers. The main reason is, email is very much time-delayed. There are different expectations; a subject line, a “Dear so-and-so,” a long signature, et cetera. Customers are anxiously sitting there waiting for a quick reply or they just ditch the chat window. Communicating with customers is at the top of many a business’ list of things to do right.

We all look forward to never having to be on hold or wait for help from a business but it will take time. The future is bright for messaging, chatbots, and for the humans who use them. This is analogous to shopping in tandem, where a customer stands in one line, while a partner waits in in another line to see which results in a minimal wait time. Chat bots are expected to reduce call volume, but they may actually be duplicating it and creating more overhead and congestion. Bots have the potential to save us time, hassle, and tedium by automating mundane tasks, like gathering your team’s lunch preferences or building a travel itinerary, which could typically eat up hours of your time.

One official account on the app, called Chumen Wenwen, is a digital assistant bot that acts like Google Now or Siri, which WeChat users can access to book flights or hotels. Special care must be taken in situations where faulty information could be dangerous, such as in chemistry laboratory experiments, using tools, or constructing mechanical devices or structures. Many participants acknowledged that chatbots offered a sense of solidarity and a safe space for self-expression.
